SLASPA COMPLETES REDUIT BEACH DEMARCATION PROJECT TO ENHANCE SAFETY AND MARINE SPACE MANAGEMENT
- Hits: 2
The initiative was undertaken in response to increasing activity within Rodney Bay and the need to better organize the use of one of Saint Lucia's busiest marine spaces. The project is designed to improve safety, enhance navigation, reduce congestion, and minimize conflicts among the various users of the bay, including watersports operators, tour vessels, leisure boaters, yachting interests, fisherfolk, swimmers, and beachgoers.
Director of Maritime Affairs, Christopher Alexander, noted that the project was guided by feedback received during consultations with marine stakeholders and reflects SLASPA's commitment to balancing safety, access, and commercial activity within the bay.
According to Alexander, stakeholder engagement was a critical component of the process, ensuring that concerns and recommendations from marine users were incorporated into the final design and layout of the demarcated zones.
The completed demarcation has been welcomed by several marine operators. Earl Lionel, owner of Early Bird Leisure Boating, expressed support for the initiative, noting that the clearly defined activity zones are expected to improve safety for both operators and swimmers while creating a more organized marine environment.
SLASPA has indicated that the project represents more than the installation of markers within the water. The Authority views the initiative as part of a broader framework for the sustainable management of Rodney Bay and other marine spaces across Saint Lucia.
Moving forward, the Department of Maritime Affairs will continue to monitor compliance within the demarcated areas and evaluate the effectiveness of the system. The Department also intends to maintain ongoing engagement with stakeholders to ensure the arrangement remains responsive to the evolving needs of the marine community.
SLASPA says the Reduit Beach Demarcation Project forms part of its long-term vision for safer, more sustainable, and better-managed marine spaces that support economic activity, tourism development, environmental stewardship, and the overall enjoyment of Saint Lucia's coastal resources.
